TOI has lost 38,000 readers in Q4- 2012-13

Five out of the top 10 English dailies have registered growth in AIR. The Tribune edges out The New Indian Express to grab the No. 9 position

The fourth quarter results of the Indian Readership Survey have just been released. According to IRS Q4 2012, five out of the top 10 English dailies have registered growth in their Average Issue Readership (AIR). There is only one change in the pecking order with The Tribune overtaking The New Indian Express to grab the No. 9 rank.

India’s largest English daily, The Times of India, has witnessed a decline in its readership in the fourth quarter of IRS 2012. The daily has lost 38,000 readers in this quarter recording an AIR of 76.15 lakh compared with 76.53 lakh in the previous quarter, 76.43 in IRS Q2 2012, 76.52 lakh in IRS Q1 2012 and 76.16 lakh in IRS Q4 2011.

The No. 2 English daily, Hindustan Times, has added 34,000 readers in the current survey recording an AIR of 38.20 lakh compared with 37.86 in IRS Q3 2012, 37.67 lakh in IRS Q2 2012 and 38.05 lakh in IRS Q1 2012.

The No. 3 English daily, The Hindu, has registered a significant decline in its AIR in this round. It has lost 94,000 readers recording an AIR of 21.64 lakh compared with 22.58 lakh in the previous quarter and 22.08 lakh in IRS Q2 2012.

The Telegraph, from ABP Group, has added a few readers this quarter after consecutive losses in the previous three quarters. By adding 11,000 readers it has recorded and AIR of 12.65 lakh against 12.54 lakh in the previous quarter, 12.75 lakh in IRS Q2 2012, 12.92 lakh in IRS Q1 2011, 12.73 lakh in IRS Q4 2011.

Deccan Chronicle has witnessed degrowth in the current quarter. By losing 31,000 readers, the daily has recorded an AIR of 10.20 lakh in IRS Q4 2012 against 10.51 in the previous survey, 10.38 lakh in IRS Q2 2012, 10.27 lakh in IRS Q1 2012, 10.34 in IRS Q4 2011.

At No.6, DNA has added 10,000 readers this quarter. The daily has registered an AIR of 9.72 lakh in IRS Q4 2012 compared with 9.62 lakh in the previous quarter, 9.30 lakh in IRS Q2 2012, 9.09 lakh in IRS Q1 2012 and 8.97 lakh in IRS Q4 2011.

Mumbai Mirror, from the TOI stable, also added 12,000 readers this quarter. The tabloid dhad added the same number of readers in the last survey. Its current AIR stands at 8.19 lakh compared with 8.07 lakh in IRS Q3 2012, 7.95 lakh in Q2, 7.77 lakh in Q1 2012 and 8.03 in IRS Q4 2011.

The Economic Times has lost a few readers for the third quarter in a row. It has lost 18,000 readers in the current survey. Its current AIR stands at 7.35 lakh against 7.53 lakh in previous quarter, 7.89 lakh in Q2, 7.92 lakh in Q1 2012, and 7.9 lakh in Q4 2011.

Continuous growth has pushed The Tribune one position up. The daily has added 18,000 readers to take its AIR at 6.71 lakh in IRS Q4 2012 compared with 6.53 lakh in the previous quarter, 6.40 lakh in IRS Q2 2012 and 6.24 lakh in IRS Q1 2012. The Tribune had 5.85 lakh readers in IRS Q4 2011.

The New Indian Express has slipped one position to No. 10 after three consecutive quarterly losses. The daily has recorded an AIR of 6.52 lakh in IRS Q4 2012 compared with 6.64 lakh in the previous quarter, 6.67 lakh in IRS Q2 2012 and 6.78 lakh in Q1 2012. TNIE had 6.37 lakh readers in IRS Q4 2011.

Average Issue Readership (AIR) of a publication is defined as the number of readers of that publication who have claimed to have last read it within its periodicity, i.e., last read a daily yesterday, a weekly within the last week, a monthly within the last month, etc.

This measure is considered to be a more relevant measure of ‘real’ or ‘regular’ readership, especially for newspapers, most of which have been read/consumed as a matter of daily habit. Conventionally, media planners even calculate and compare cost-benefits of dailies based on the AIR figure. Hence, it is perhaps the most relevant to study readership trends as well in terms of AIR.

Now Indian Television Channel Show only 12 Minute advertisement in Clock hour show

TRAI notifies the regulation “Standards of Quality of Service
(Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Amendment) Regulations, 2013”
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has today notified the regulation “Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Amendment) Regulations, 2013.

TRAI has studied the issue of duration of advertisements being carried in TV channels. The data obtained from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and that collected from the broadcasters, clearly established the general perception that most of the TV channels are in brazen breach of the existing rules on the subject, notified by the Central Government in the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.

The duration of advertisements being carried in TV channels is closely related to the quality of viewing experience of the consumers which is akin to the quality of service being offered by the service providers to the consumers.

To ensure the quality of service and protect the interests of the consumers, TRAI has notified the regulation “Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Amendment) Regulations, 2013. This regulation mandates the broadcasters to restrict the duration of advertisements in their channels to a maximum of 12 minutes in any given clock-hour as prescribed in the existing rules. In order to monitor and ensure compliance of these regulations, broadcasters are now also mandated to report the duration of advertisements carried in their channels to the Authority on quarterly basis in a proforma prescribed by the Authority.

Telecom sector recorded maximum complaints 19%

National Consumer Helpline Records 12,088 Calls in February, 2013

The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) received 12,088 calls during February, 2013. In addition to these telephonic calls/complaints, 2034 complaints were also received through online complaint system on NCH website.

The maximum calls were received from Delhi followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Punjab.

As per feedback received from 1848 callers, 1676 complaints were resolved under convergence with various companies.

Consumers from across the country can access the toll free National Consumer Help Line No. 1800-11-400 and seek telephonic counseling for consumer related problems faced by them. The Consumer Helpline also provides information, advice and guidance related to consumer issues. Complaints can be registered also on the website: www.nationalconsumerhelpline.in.

IIPM’s claim on The Hindu: A clarification

A write-up titled “IIPM: The B-School with a Human Face,” was published in the Delhi edition of The Hindu on September 2, 2012 as part of what was clearly marked as an “Advertisers’ Feature” on the Delhi Book Fair. The material was supplied to our Advertisement Department by representatives of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). It was published with the clear understanding on the part of all concerned that it was paid-for advertisement material and not editorial matter.

Given these facts and circumstances, it was illegal and unethical for IIPM to include a line in an advertisement it recently placed in certain newspapers that “IIPM has been called the B-School with a ‘Human Face’ by The Hindu,” implying an endorsement of its credentials by this newspaper. The Hindu was in fact approached by IIPM’s representatives last week seeking to publish the same advertisement, but we insisted that the inaccurate claim about The Hindu having described it as a “B-School with a human face” be deleted from it. IIPM refused to do this and went ahead and placed the advertisement in several newspapers.

The Hindu hereby would like to make it clear to current and prospective students of IIPM that it has not made any such editorial endorsement of the institution. We have now formally written to IIPM asking it to refrain from repeating the claim, and putting it on notice of our intent to proceed suitably against it if it persists in doing so.

60th National Film Awards Best Actor Irrfan Khan & Vikram Gokhale

60th National Film Awards Announced Jury headed by Shri Basu Chatterjee for Feature Films, Ms. Aruna Raje for Non-Feature Films and Shri Swapan Mullick for Best Writing on Cinema announce the Awards

The prestigious 60^th National Film Awards for the year 2012 were announced here today at a joint Press Conference addressed by the Chairpersons of the three juries, Shri Basu Chatterjee for Feature Films, Ms. Aruna Raje for Non-Feature Films and Shri Swapan Mullick for Best Writing on Cinema.

The award for the best feature film has been conferred to Paan Singh Tomar (Hindi) produced by UTV Software communications Ltd. and directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia . In non-feature film category, the award for the Best Film has been conferred to Shepherds of Paradise (Gojri & Urdu) produced and directed by Raja Shabir Khan. In the category of Best Writing on Cinema section, the book Silent Cinema in India – A Pictorial Journey (English) written by B.D. Garga and published by Harper Collins Publisher India has bagged the top honour, whereas Shri P.S. Radhakrishnan has been conferred the award for the Best film Critic.

In the Feature Film category, a total of 38 films from 14 languages have been selected for the 60^th National Awards. Chittagong (Hindi) and 101 Chodiyangal (Malayalam) have shared the Indira Gandhi award for the Best Debut Film of a Director. The award for the Best Popular Film for providing wholesome entertainment has been shared by Vicky Donor (Hindi) and Ustad Hotel (Malayalam). The award for the Best Director has been conferred on Shri Shivaji Lotan Patil for the film Dhag (Marathi). The award for the Best Actor has been shared by Shri Irrfaan playing the title role in Paan Singh Tomar and Shri Vikram Gokhale for the film Anumati(Marathi). The award for the Best Actress has been conferred on Ms Usha Jadhav for her performance in Dhag (Marathi). The award for the best Supporting Actor has been conferred on Shri Anu Kapur for the film Vicky Donor. The award for the best supporting Actress has been shared by Ms Dolly Ahluwalia for the film Vicky Donor and Ms Kalpana for the film ThanichallaNjan (Malyalam). The Best Child Artist award has been shared by Master Virendra Pratap for Dekh Indian Circus (Hindi) and Master Minon for 101 Chodiyangal (Malayalam).

The award for the Best Male playback singer has been conferred on Shri Shankar Mahadevan for the song Bolo Na from the film Chittagong. The award for the Best Female Playback singer has been conferred on Ms Samhita for the song Palakein Naa Moon Don from the film Aarti Anklekartikekar (Marathi). The award for the best Screen play writer (original) has been conferred on Shri Sujoy Ghosh for the film Kahaani. The award for best Screen play writer (adapted) has been conferred on Shri Bhavesh Mandalia and Shri Umesh Shukla for the film Oh My God. The award for the best Dialogue has been conferred on Ms Anjali Menon for the film Ustad Hotel (Malayalam). The award for the best lyrics has been conferred on Shri Prasoon Joshi for the song Bolo Na from the film Chittagong. A special jury award has been conferred on Shri Rituparno Ghosh and Shri Nawazuddin Siddiqui for the films Chitrangadha (Bengali), Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur, Dekh Indian circus and Talaash (Hindi). The award for the best choreography has been conferred on Pt. Birju Maharaj for the film Vishwaroopam (Tamil).

In the Non-Feature Film category, Shri Vikrant Pawar has got the Best Director award for the film Kaatal (Marathi). The Award for the Best Debut Film of a Director has been conferred to Shri Lipika Singh Darai for the film Eka Gachha Eka Manisa Eka Samudra (Odia). Shumona Goel and Shai Heredia for the film I Am Micro (English) and Vasudah Joshi for Cancer Katha (English) have been selected for Special Jury Award. Timbaktu (English) has been awarded as the Best film in the Environmental category and Dreaming Taj Mahal ( Hindi & Urdu) has been conferred the award for the Best Promotional film.
